Superintendent's Weekly Memo - September 27, 2024
Dear Mustang Families,
We’ve almost made it through the first full month of school. Our students have been shining in their school communities since starting the new year; our teachers and administrators are so appreciative of their hard work.
At the Missituk Elementary School, students were recognized this morning with Conduct & Citizenship ribbons for their outstanding achievement in upholding the school’s core values. As a reward for their positive contributions to their school community this month, the students helped pick the theme for the next school spirit day and were invited to sit on the stage during today’s lunch period with Principal Sherman-Hudson.
This time of year, we are truly able to appreciate and realize how fortunate we are to be living in New England. While we dealt with some rain earlier in the week, I hope that you and your family are able to get out this weekend and enjoy this beautiful fall weather. If you are looking for fun things to do in the community, scan through our upcoming events at the end of this memo to help schedule your weekend plans!
As a reminder, our schools will be closed next Thursday, October 3, in celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year, invites us to look back on the past year, celebrate our achievements, and consider the opportunities for growth in the year ahead. To our Jewish friends and all who are celebrating, I wish you a happy new year filled with health, joy, and peace.

McGlynn Playground Ribbon Cutting Ceremony To Be Held on Oct. 8
In collaboration with the City of Medford, I want to invite you to our ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new, universally accessible McGlynn Elementary School playground on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 3:30 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate and play on the new playground following the ceremony.
I want to thank the McGlynn Playground Committee, Dr. Peter Cushing, Mayor Lungo-Koehn, the Medford School Committee, our consultation and design partners, and all those who helped create this outdoor, universally accessible space for all. If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend or participate in this event, please contact City of Medford ADA Coordinator Frances Nwajei.

Medford Comprehensive High School Building Committee Update
Last week saw the Medford Comprehensive High School Building Committee (MCHSBC) meet for the first time this school year. We submitted all required paperwork for the first phase of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process earlier this summer, and last week’s meeting served as a great check-in as we await to hear from the MSBA on potential next steps. Thank you to our MCHSBC committee members for their unwavering dedication to creating a new high school for our students.
The MSBA is also now accepting entries for their “Building a Logo” contest, with the top three finishers receiving a cash prize! Visit Here for official contest rules.
Bistro 489 Now Open
The Bistro 489 reopened their doors to Medford Community this week! Operated by our wonderfully talented students and staff in our Culinary Arts Vocational program, community members can stop by to enjoy delicious breakfast and lunch food options. Bistro 489 is open Monday to Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Medford High School (closed Sept. 30).
Free Vaccination Clinics for Students and Families
MPS Health Services is collaborating with Smiles by Rosie to provide free in-school flu & COVID-19 vaccinations for students. If you are interested in having your child receive a vaccine at school, please Visit Here to fill out the consent form.
MPS & the Medford Board of Health will be hosting a Health Services Fair on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Andrews Middle School. Visit Here to learn more about the event.
At the Health Services Fair, attendees can tour a mock teenager’s bedroom in an "In Plain Sight" showcase, highlighting potentially hidden factors that may indicate social, emotional, and physical challenges.
