Superintendent's Weekly Memo - September 20, 2024

Superintendent's Weekly Memo - September 20, 2024
Dr. Marice Edouard-Vincent, Superintendent

Dear Mustang Families,

Sunday marks the first day of fall, and it has been a joy to see our students and teachers foster welcoming classroom environments so quickly into the school year. Our principals and staff across the district are so appreciative of the attendance at our curriculum nights held these past two weeks and thank you for your continued dedication to your child’s learning. We continue to encourage parental engagement throughout the year.

This week our sixth grade students at the McGlynn Middle School had the opportunity to spend time outside as part of the Wilderness Inquiry “Canoemobile” experience! The program, designed to educate students about how to safely engage in urban rivers and environments that are close to where they live, was held during Thursday’s school day at the Mystic River. Students spent time paddling on the water and learning about the surrounding environment. Thank you to the City of Medford, artist Carolyn Lewenberg, Friends of the Malden River, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and others for hosting this wonderful educational experience for our students.

Today’s Memo includes:

  • Transportation Update
  • Message From Health Services
  • Medford Family Network Phonelines
  • Electronics Recycling Fundraiser
  • Job Openings
  • Upcoming Events

Transportation Update

We continue to be in consistent dialogue with our bus provider, Eastern Bus, regarding the bus driver shortage our district is facing. The lack of available bus drivers is resulting in overcrowding on our existing buses and logistical challenges for our afterschool programs.

Shortfalls in bus transportation are not a challenge unique to Medford; however, we continue to create solutions that best meet the needs of our community. For example, for Brooks Elementary students in Sigma afterschool programming, individuals are volunteering their time to monitor our students while they wait for the bus to their Sigma programs. While this is understandably a short-term solution, I want to thank all those involved for being patient and flexible while we work through these transportation challenges.

It is in the best interest of both Medford Public Schools and our bus provider to resolve these challenges, and we are persistently collaborating in order to do so.

A Message From Our School Health Department

As we have returned to school on a daily basis, we are seeing a number of people reporting they are sick in both schools and in other workplaces. Stay home when you have symptoms of any respiratory illness such as flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Staying home when sick helps prevent the spread of germs, even if you aren’t aware of what respiratory virus is making you sick. While you stay home, our School Health Department recommends getting tested for COVID-19 and flu. Visit Here for more helpful advice about respiratory illnesses from our School Health Department.

MPS Health Services is collaborating with Smiles by Rosie to provide in-school flu vaccination clinics for students. Consent forms will be sent home with elementary students; parents of secondary students can expect further communication next week.

Lastly, MPS & the Medford Board of Health will be hosting a Health Services Fair on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Andrews Middle School. Visit Here to learn more about the event.

Medford Family Network Phonelines

Thank you for your patience as we worked to restore the old telephone number for the Medford Family Network. The following phone number for the MFN is once again in operation: 781-393-2106.
